“Adversity to me is almost as good as encouragement.  Close a door in front of me and I will find a way around it, under it, or through it.”   William E. Lewis Jr.

We can become so accustomed to adversity, until we lose sight of our destination.  It is our destination that is really important here.  When we start out working toward a goal we often meet resistance or are sidetracked for a number of reasons.  Whatever happens, and however you respond to what is happening, keep in mind that your life has a destination.   Decide what that destination is.

The quote above is all about taking matters into your own hands and fighting through resistance, which is sometimes what we need to do.  My personal journey has taught me that there is also another way to overcome adversity.  Seek support from people, and more importantly from your Higher Power.  The most impossible situations in my life were not overcome by my own tenacity; though many setbacks in my life have been.  They were overcome by true miracles.

The point is, whatever comes into your life, keep your focus on the destination; because there is always a way to get there.  Your destination does not depend on what the doctor says (doctors gave me 7 years to live when I was 4, 3 days to live when I was 11, and 14 years ago gave me literally 5 minutes to live).  Your destination does not depend on what your bank statement says, who the president is, or what people are saying about you on Facebook.  Keep moving toward your destination.  Often, the adversity can function as a catalyst in your life to get you to your destination.  Might sound crazy, but it’s true.

Decide what your destination is going to be, then keep moving toward it, and be patient with the setbacks.

You have been created for a meaningful destiny, and you will be able to fulfill it.

  1. Can you talk a bit more about “your life has a destination”? Perhaps give examples? Because I don’t feel that I have one single and clear destination. I’m committed to milking the experience of being alive for all it’s worth, and to supporting and comforting those in need whose paths cross mine, and to perhaps leaving the world slightly improved for my having been here, but those are more values than destinations and require minute-to-minute and day-to-day decisions, goals, and actions. Where is it all leading? I have no idea. I’m too busy taking the journey, wherever it may go. Until it finally stops going. But that, I can see, is NOT the destination you have in mind in this piece!

  2. This is again, a remarkable writing. My destination has always been Heaven, ever since I knew about it. I also, want to contribute something positive to the world while I’m here. That causes me to have many destinations as I live, on this earth. Unfortunately, that means that many of them, are not easy to achieve without many roadblocks. That means that we have to keep our eyes on the goal and be willing to do what is necessary to get there. It also, helps us to make it all the way through to our end goal of Heaven, for eternity. Thank you, again!
